Cross-cultural festival for Children’s Rights by UNICEF, with the support of INTERAMERICAN
Tuesday 15 December 2009
This year’s UNICEF cross-cultural event is dedicated to Children’s Rights and will be held on Sunday, December 20, at the Mets indoor gymnasium, with the sponsorship of INTERAMERICAN.
This festival was established in order to give joy to children belonging to social groups on the fringes of social life so as to communicate messages on their position and role in modern Greek society. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the launching of this event with the Convention on the Rights of the Child as a binding legal tool for the protection of the right to survival, growth, care and participation of children in decisions that affect their lives. Greece ratified the Convention in 1992 and UNICEF is one of the organizations guarding the articles it includes.
Referring to the event during a Press Conference, Mr. Lambros Kanellopoulos, President of the Hellenic National Committee for UNICEF, stated that “every year, the cross-cultural meeting reflects the concept of a single society for children, without discrimination, in an environment of full protection and care, so that they may live and grow up in dignity”, adding that INTERAMERICAN has been UNICEF’s unwavering ally in its efforts to create a better world for children.
Mr. Yiannis Roundos, Director of Public Relations and Corporate Social Responsibility of INTERAMERICAN, underlined the necessity of recognising equal rights to life for all children throughout the world, stressing the activity undertaken by UNICEF in Greece. “Poverty, hunger, squalor, inability to access health services and education characterize the child population of minority communities in numerous countries, including our own, and UNICEF undertakes major initiatives in order to reverse this reality that demeans our civilization”, stated the representative of the sponsoring company.
This support initiative by INTERAMERICAN is included in the “Acts of Life” Corporate Social Responsibility Programme, which the company has been consistently implementing since 2003.
